When should I ask for more or less pressure?

We are adding this because not everyone knows when to maybe try a deep tissue rather than a Swedish massage.  All of our therapists can switch to this service to something deeper if desired and/or needed… but try and wait until a few minutes into it and see how your body feels…our recommendation is to wait about 15 minutes before asking for more pressure, but always ask for less immediately whenever you can feel your muscles tensing up.

Originating in Thailand with influences from all over Asia, this is the perfect blend of everything you need… relaxing while also being bent into a little pretzel.  There are so many benefits to this service, but this is especially perfect for those who have a limited range of motion due to stiff muscles or joints.  Having flexibility as well as strength is the best way to avoid injury, and getting a thai massage once a month is the perfect way to keep up with stretching.  This massage requires very little to no lotion so it’s a great option for the mornings or middle of the day, and most clients feel an overall sense of well-being, more energy, and increased flexibility after their first session.  If you have always wanted to get into a stretching routine, this is a great place to start!

What is included in a Thai massage?

Thai massage styles vary among practitioners.  There can be a lot of compression, big dynamic stretching, tapping and some footwork.  A thai massage generally starts from the feet to the head and is done on a mat on the floor rather than a table.

Do you wear clothes during Thai massage?

 Level of clothing is based on needs but underwear is always worn.  Women will wear a shirt or sports bra.  Please bring warm athletic clothing in the winter months.  Jeans and other inflexible clothing cannot be worn, so please come prepared!  Call if you are unsure of what to wear and we will do our best to accommodate you.

What happens in a couples massage?

Every spa and massage studio has a different signature couples massage experience.  At Urban Haven, we try to expose couples to great therapists that may not always be free to get a massage… or simply make it an activity you both can add to your date nights.  It’s a great way to start an evening before a night out downtown and destress both of you so you can enjoy spending time together.

Do couples talk during couples massages?

You can choose to talk or not talk during your massage to each other and the therapist.  We do ask that you let your loved one enjoy their treatment if they need to relax and to keep the volume low for other guests.

Will we be in the same room?

Urban Haven has three couples rooms available but fills up quickly on weekends.  Please reach out to us if you would like to be in the same room, but if a room is not available, we will open a door in rooms adjacent.  We can also put you in separate rooms but call to request this before coming to your appointment.

What happens if my date or lover can't make it… or just doesn't show up?

Absolutely no worries.  It happens, and for whatever reason it is, you can still come for the appointment all on your own.  We will have two therapists available to massage just you, the ultimate luxury few get to experience.

Relaxation

This massage is exactly what the title suggests… relaxing.  This is our gentle, non-therapeutic massage option that consists of slow, long, rhythmic strokes and small circular movements which help break down stress found within the body and promote better movement.  Unlike deep-tissue massages, a relaxation massage does not treat any health conditions, but is instead used to reduce overall tension.  

Touch helps us feel connected to those around us and more in tune with the state of our body.  Everything always feels better after a nice scalp massage at the hairdresser, or the quick hand massage after a well deserved manicure.  We recommend this massage to anyone who needs a good night’s sleep, is above the age of 60, or has never had a massage before.

Why a relaxation massage vs other massages?

In a world that’s moving so quickly, as much as we like to have a deep tissue to really FEEL bodywork,, its important to realize the importance of just having a moment of quiet and light rhythmic work.  Every type of massage has its time and place, and we all need to slow down and ground ourselves once in a while.  Light touch can be just as effective when its needed.

Prenatal

Congratulations! Whether this is your first pregnancy, or one of many, it’s never too late to start a massage routine.  A Prenatal massage can relieve common swelling, muscle aches, and overall stress during this exciting time.  Many of our moms-to-be have never had a massage before, and that’s okay too!  We cater pressure and techniques to your body and trimester so that you can focus on staying happy and healthy for your baby.  Everyone has different comfort levels, so please take the time to arrive early to speak to your therapist and feel free to ask for adjustments at any time during the massage.  All of our prenatal therapists have helped many women throughout their pregnancies.  We ask that you wait until after your first trimester, but can receive as many as you would like after, up until the day you deliver!

Urban Haven is up a flight of stairs, so please feel free to ask us for assistance if needed.  We do also provide at-home services depending on availability and location.  As always, we do ask that you come in the studio at least once to get acquainted with your therapist.

What do they do in a prenatal massage?

Prenatal massage is about relaxing mama so that she can stay as unstressed as possible.  We also stimulate the soft tissues of the body to reduce the fluids that cause swollen joints. This practice helps remove the tissue waste to reduce muscle aches and joint pain.  We add a few light hip stretches to relieve back pain.

What is the difference between a regular and prenatal massage?

Prenatal massage predominantly uses Swedish massage and some very light stretching. Deep tissue pressure, which is common in other therapeutic massages, won’t be used as it could potentially be harmful to mama or baby.  Pregnant women should never have their back cracked or adjusted unless by a licensed chiropractor and under the advice of their doctor.  Prenatals focus on relaxing the mother so that she can be happy and healthy for her baby!  We avoid using heat on the table and make time for a bathroom break. We also lie mamas face-up with a wedge to keep pressure off the low back and sometimes in a comfortable sideline position.

Where should you not be massaged when pregnant?

Our experienced therapists stay safe by avoiding certain pressure points associated with the pelvis and uterus on the wrists, hands, and ankles. These areas can still be lightly massaged, but we avoid any deep work here.  Due to the risk of blood clots during pregnancy, we avoid deep tissue massage in the legs.

Table Thai Massage

A Thai massage is traditionally done fully clothed on a mat, on the floor… but what if you find this too uncomfortable? Suffer neck problems? Or have never tried a Thai massage and aren’t sure if it’s for you?

Not to worry, we have taken all of our traditional Thai techniques and put them on the table for your comfort.  You can do this fully clothed or draped with a blanket and have a blend of deep tissue or swedish along with these amazing stretches.

When should I try a table Thai massage?

If you are experiencing pain that isn’t relieved by a traditional massage but is still due to muscular tightness, this massage will include stretches that will help almost everyone.  Un-flexible people should absolutely start here to begin their daily stretch routine and find their trouble spots.  If you have healthy joints and are already flexible, we can take you to your limits without injury.

Is it painful?

Stretching should never be painful, but rather felt.  Do not ask our therapists to stretch you too far past the point of what your body tells us to.  Flexibility takes practice, deep breaths, and patience.  This combined with massage routine will help prevent injury and relieve tightness hard to reach with traditional massages.  Our pressure, like all of our massages, can be adjusted according to taste.

Ashiatsu

Ashiatsu massage is a massage almost entirely performed by a therapist’s feet.  What’s special about getting a massage from the feet, is its big broad pressure, making it a relaxing yet effective experience.  Imagine a dance on your back that your body slowly melts away to, or the deepest massage you have received if that’s your thing. The pressure is much deeper if desired than a regular deep tissue because the foot itself weighs more than the hand, and then is accompanied by the therapist’s entire body weight.  Elbows and thumbs can feel sharp, whereas a toe and heel are larger joints, so they are stronger and cover more surface area of the body, laying into troublesome knots with ease.  

Why is this a more specialized service? And a booking I need to make in advance based on availability?

In the state of Ohio, you must be certified to be insured to perform this massage, and we take the safety of our clients seriously.  Please understand that this is a high demand, specialized service, therefore plan in advance, and be considerate of highly trained therapists and their availability.

Foot Fetish Peeps

This is unfortunately a professional establishment.  While we support all of life adventures as long as everyone is a consenting adult… we do not perform this massage for sexual (pleasure??? Insert word ) and purely are embracing one of the many massage techniques for health benefits only.  Do not ask for inappropriate favors and we will not massage your face with our feet.  This is a judgment free zone but please don’t make it our business or make anyone uncomfortable. 

Why is this one of the best modalities for a massage therapist to learn?

While beginning to massage with the feet can feel like starting over, the feet are a much stronger part of our body with nerve endings almost as sensitive as our fingers.  It’s a grounding, graceful flow.  This has been one of the most life changing modalities I have pushed for therapists to learn to preserve the longevity of our hands, bodies and careers.  Rather than hunching over and stressing our thumbs, standing up straight using the bars installed at urban haven can create an unforgettable experience without breaking our backs.

Cupping Massage

Think of cupping as “negative pressure” that brings blood flow to troubled areas and loosens up the fascia without having to dig into knots.  Joint troubles are usually caused by lack of blood flow, so cupping aims to fix that by creating a suction cup around the area and forcing blood to collect.  This may or may not cause some temporary marks, that cupping is famous for, and can last up to two weeks for clients first starting out. The darker the marks, the more the trouble spot needed the work.  It can be a wonderful add-on to any massage based on the therapist of your choosing and focus area, or can be a full session within itself.  Please ask for this before your session so we can have the proper equipment cleaned and available in the room.

What does it feel like?

I wouldn’t say that cupping is a relaxing experience, but it’s not meant to be overly painful and there shouldn’t be too much soreness after the treatment.  Cupping is a sensation that takes getting used to, but when done correctly, can leave you with long lasting results.  

When and where should I not get cupping?

You should not receive cupping on open wounds, inflammation, body orifices, eyes, lymph nodes, or varicose veins.  Cupping should also not be done on bone fractures or sites of deep vein thrombosis.  Please call the studio to list any special conditions or injuries you may have so you may be approved by an experienced therapist, and always ask your doctor if you are unsure about this treatment.  

What do I do about the marks?

Cupping is a very common treatment and most of the public knows that the treatment looks like, but no not do this treatment if you are planning an event that you would not like these marks to appear in within 3 weeks after the session just to be sure.

Lymphatic Drainage

Whether you are a post-op or a lymphodema client, Urban Haven has got you covered.  Lymphatic drainage its self is a very light, relaxing, and detoxing massage.  It’s perfect for those who like a very light touch and are interested in their lymphatic systems health.  The massage itself is very light because we are helping move this fluid just under the skin… so if you are looking for a deep tissue, this is not the massage for you.

Receiving a massage post-op is imperative to the best looking result possible.  After your surgery, lymphatic fluid will collect within the tissues and needs to be manually moved until the end of your recovery process.  When the skin is cut and becomes inflamed,  the fascia will start to harden without proper lymphatic massages after and create an uneven, unnatural look.  Don’t waste your money or risk your future health by skipping this step after a huge investment and get to enjoy the best looking results possible.

Certified in the Vodder method, this type of MLD was a pioneer in serving the lymphedema community with their own clinics and improving their quality of life.  This safe, effective treatment will be a great addition to wraps given by the physical therapist and will provide a pain management tool to last a lifetime.  Please share all letters and prescriptions from your doctor so we can help work with your insurance company and make the best plan for you.

Trauma Informed Massage

Trauma informed massage is a client-centered approach to massage therapy.  The body will store trauma within the body and can physically turn into pain and limited range of motion, then slowly create imbalances after years of neglect.

Trigger Point Therapy

If you have never heard of a trigger point, picture when you’re giving yourself a massage… have you ever felt a lump that feels a little painful and loosens after rubbing it for a while? Sometimes it can feel a bit tender or crunchy!  Chances are, you have found a trigger point. Weakness, small tares, tense muscles, dehydration, and even poor diet can cause trigger points to form.  There can be a bit of trigger point therapy in all massage sessions, but in Urban Haven, we have devoted a session to just what you need.  We will work our way into those spots, and wait for them to release. This pressure is direct and prolonged so our sessions are shorter for your comfort and for effectiveness.  You may be sore after this treatment but will feel a sense of pain relief overall.

At home appointments are for existing clients only and can be refused for any reason, at any time. If a therapist feels threatened or uncomfortable, the appointment will be stopped immediately with no refund. 30% gratuity minimum will be added.

If you’re already flexible, we can take you to your limits… and if you are just getting started, we can make sure you are stretching safely and comfortably.  So many of us only stretch for 5 or 10 minutes before or after a workout because we are short on time (and sometimes experience).  Its so important to stretch the whole body fully, so adding this to any massage service will help with your recovery, workouts, and overall health.  We will teach you how to relax and breathe into stretches, and find your tight areas to work on at home.  For those of us who like a swedish and deep tissue, add some time for stretching and you will thank us later.
